Halloween Cookies

Big, chewy oatmeal cookies studded with M&Ms and pecans -- a crowd-pleasing treat from Nigella Lawson.

  • 1 cupflour
  • ½ tspbaking powder
  • ½ tspsalt
  • 1 cuprolled oats
  • 9 tbspbutter, at room temperature
  • ½ cuplight brown sugar
  • ½ cupsuperfine sugar
  • 1 largeegg
  • 1 tspvanilla extract
  • ¾ cupchopped pecans
  • 1 cupM&Ms or Reese's Pieces

Method

    Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and oats. In an electric mixer, beat butter and both sugars until creamy. Add egg and vanilla; beat until smooth.

    Add flour mixture and beat until smooth. By hand, fold in pecans and M&Ms.

    Roll quarter-cup measures of dough into balls and flatten into fat disks about 1/2 inch thick. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets, about 6 at a time, leaving room to spread.

    Bake until risen, dry on surface, and very lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. They will be too soft to lift. Let harden 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
